Beginner Guitar Course - Syllabus
Course Overview: This course is designed for individuals who are new to playing the guitar. By the end of this course, students will understand basic music theory, be comfortable with basic chords and strumming patterns, and will be able to play simple songs.Course Duration: 12 weeks (2 lessons per week)
Introduction to Guitar and Basic Chords
Lesson 1: Getting to Know Your Guitar
- Parts of the guitar: body, neck, headstock, strings, fretboard
- How to properly hold the guitar (sitting and standing)
- Tuning your guitar using a tuner
- Basic introduction to left and right hand techniques
- Left-hand positioning on the fretboard
- Right-hand strumming technique
Lesson 2: Open Chords
- Introduction to basic open chords:
- E minor (Em)
- C major (C)
- G major (G)
- D major (D)
- Practicing chord transitions between Em, C, G, and D
- Introduction to simple down strumming
- Practice exercises to build finger strength and coordination
Basic Strumming and Timing
Lesson 3: Strumming Patterns
- Understanding rhythm and timing (quarter notes, eighth notes)
- Simple down and up strumming techniques
- Practice with basic strumming patterns:
- Down, down, up, up, down, up
- Down, down, down, down (for slow songs)
Lesson 4: More Chords and Transitions
- Introduction to the A major (A) and E major (E) chords
- Practice switching between all open chords: C, D, G, Em, A, and E
- Simple exercises to strengthen chord changes and strumming patterns
Playing Simple Songs
Lesson 5: Introduction to Simple Songs
- Learn a few beginner-friendly songs that use basic open chords, such as:
- "Horse with No Name" by America (Em, D6add9/F#)
- "Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door" by Bob Dylan (G, D, A minor, C)
- How to follow chord charts and song structures
- Practicing chord progressions along with the song
Lesson 6: Song Practice and Improving Transitions
- More practice with the songs learned
- Focus on smooth transitions between chords while strumming
- Basic song structure: Verse, Chorus, Bridge
Expanding Chord Knowledge and Fingerstyle Introduction
Lesson 7: More Chords
- Introduction to the F major (F) and B minor (Bm) chords
- Practice with F barre chord in open position
- Transitioning between more complex chords (including F and Bm)
Lesson 8: Introduction to Fingerpicking
- Explanation of fingerpicking vs. strumming
- Practice basic fingerpicking patterns using thumb and first two fingers
- Applying fingerpicking to simple chords (e.g., C, G, Am)
Understanding Music Theory Basics
Lesson 9: Introduction to Music Theory
- Understanding the chromatic scale and the major scale
- Building chords from the major scale
- Introduction to the concept of intervals (whole steps, half steps)
- The Circle of Fifths and its application to guitar
Lesson 10: Applying Theory to the Fretboard
- Locating notes on the fretboard
- Understanding and practicing intervals between strings
- Introduction to power chords (5th chords)
Playing More Songs and Review
Lesson 11: Learning More Songs
- Choose another simple song to learn, incorporating power chords or fingerpicking (e.g., "Wish You Were Here" by Pink Floyd or "Stand By Me" by Ben E. King)
- Practice playing along with backing tracks or a metronome
Lesson 12: Review and Final Performance
- Review of all learned chords and strumming patterns
- Practice a full song from beginning to end
- Final performance where students play their favorite song or a selection of songs they’ve learned
Course Requirements:
- Own a guitar (acoustic or electric)
- A tuner (clip-on or app-based)
- A pick and a guitar strap (for comfort)
- A notebook to track progress and song notes
Practice Recommendations:
- Daily practice of 15-30 minutes
- Focus on smooth chord transitions and rhythm
- Use a metronome to improve timing
